Crimson Desert Faces Backlash: AI Art Sneaks into Game's Release, Developers Promise Fix
Soon after the release of the action-RPG Crimson Desert, gamers discovered art and assets clearly created by generative artificial intelligence. The public is extremely negative about any manifestations of this technology in games, and combined with other shortcomings of the title, this became a serious reason for criticism.
Developers remained silent for several days and finally explained how the “neurosloop” found its way into Crimson Desert.
“You all misunderstood”
Representatives of the South Korean studio Pearl Abyss confirmed that at an early stage of the game's development, they indeed used generative AI to quickly create concept art and basic objects in the game — this was supposed to reduce the time spent on designing the look, atmosphere, and artistic style of Crimson Desert.
The authors swear they planned to delete all generated art and replace it with works by their artists and designers, but “for some reason” some neural network materials ended up in the release version of the game.
Sample use of generative AI in Crimson Desert
Developers apologized for not indicating the use of AI in the creation of Crimson Desert.
Corrective action
Pearl Abyss initiated an internal investigation and promises that all AI materials will be removed from the game soon.
Crimson Desert is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series and, despite the criticism, on the first day alone it sold 2 million copies.
