New information has emerged about Project Canis — a powerful portable Sony console which, unlike the PlayStation Portal, is being developed for native game launching and is expected to be released simultaneously with the PlayStation 6 home console to create a unified ecosystem.

What is known

Respected tech insider KeplerL2 reported that, in terms of standard graphics processing, the Project Canis processor surpasses not only the Nintendo Switch 2 but also the stationary Xbox Series S, which is already considered weak and outdated, but for a compact gadget, such a level will be a breakthrough.

Moreover, the Sony console handles ray tracing significantly better than the Xbox Series S. It is important to emphasize that the PSSR scaling technology (expected to be the third version upon the console's release) will provide a much sharper picture with high performance than can be achieved on the Nintendo Switch 2 with its NVIDIA DLSS "Light".

According to previous leaks, the PlayStation 6 Portable (likely Project Canis will be released under this name) will feature a processor with four Zen 6c cores and two energy-efficient Zen 6 LP cores, graphics on the RDNA 5 architecture with 16 compute units, 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory with a 192-bit bus, and a sub-135mm² 3nm TSMC process chip.

PlayStation 6 and Project Canis are expected to go on sale at the end of 2027, but reputable analysts do not rule out that their release may be postponed due to a crisis in the memory and other component markets.
