Sony Acquires Cinemersive Labs to Revolutionize PlayStation Graphics with AI for Future Consoles
Sony continues to aggressively develop its own image quality enhancement technologies in games and has taken an important step in this direction — it has bought the British company Cinemersive Labs, which specializes in machine learning and computer vision technologies.
What is known
The Cinemersive Labs team will help the Japanese company implement cutting-edge technologies into already existing graphics rendering and visual effects systems on PlayStation consoles.
Moreover, British specialists will also assist in the development of PSSR technology, developed by Sony and AMD to upscale images without overloading the console's processor. It already uses AI to generate additional pixels, and the works of Cinemersive Labs will help perfect it since this is one of the company's specializations.
Obviously, the purchase is made with consideration Sony's Project Canis: Portable Console to Outperform Xbox Series S and Rival Nintendo Switch 2, both expected to be released in 2027, and experts have no doubt that PSSR and other AI options will play an important role in them.
The deal's cost has not yet been disclosed.
