Anbernic's RG Rotate: A Retro Gaming Console with a Rotating Screen Inspired by Motorola Flipout
The retro console market is facing another "twist," and this time in the literal sense. It seems the company Anbernic decided that regular vertical and horizontal consoles are already boring and is preparing to release the Anbernic RG Rotate.
Let's note right away that the information presented below is leaks and insights, as the Chinese manufacturer has not yet officially introduced the upcoming novelty, which promises to be one of the most unusual devices for retro gaming.
A Hello from the 2010s
The main feature of the device is the screen-slider mechanism, reminiscent of the legendary Motorola Flipout phone.
In a closed state, it is almost a perfect square with a 1:1 aspect ratio, which easily fits in a pocket. However, when the screen is slid along an arc (rotated), a full-fledged internal panel with buttons and sticks is revealed. In this form, the RG Rotate console resembles the iconic Nintendo DS, but without the second display.
Apart from the aesthetics of "futuristic retro," this design makes the device maximally compact and allows the use of only the touchscreen without physical elements.
Technical Specifications
According to leaks, the RG Rotate screen diagonal will be 3.5–4", the battery capacity 2000 mAh with support for 10W charging via USB-C, and Android will be used as the operating system.
The console is designed with retro game emulation in mind, mainly from Nintendo 64, but it is known that it will support some other functions, for example, it can be used as a player.
When to expect
It is not yet known when the RG Rotate will be officially presented, but judging by Anbernic's activity on social networks, the release may take place in the coming months. The expected price is around $75–90, which is quite affordable for such an unusual form factor.
