Today is a big day for Bethesda and Starfield fans — the controversial RPG of 2023 has launched on PlayStation 5, and received a global Free Lanes update and paid DLC Terran Armada. However, let's go in order.

No Longer an Xbox Exclusive

Starfield is now available on PS5 in digital and physical formats in two editions — standard for $50 and premium with all additional content for $70.

On PS5 Pro, two modes are available — Visual and Performance. In the first case, the space RPG delivers 4K at 30 fps, and in the second — 60 fps. Both modes use PSSR upscaling technology. Additionally, the game actively utilizes the capabilities of the DualSense controller, including adaptive triggers and vibration.

Free Lanes Update

In Starfield, there is now the ability to move independently in real-time between planets within one solar system without loading screens. To simplify this process, autopilot is offered, and during the journey, the player can take the opportunity to talk to crew members, sort their items, upgrade gear or plan the next steps.

Free Lanes also adds:

  • expansion of the game world: new locations, activities, random events, side quests, and underground zones emerged;
  • ship constructor updates: new elements and modules for customization were added;
  • introduced X-Tech system, deepening crafting. With it, you can upgrade equipment and weapons (including changing their legendary properties) and improve ship components using a new type of resource;
  • new enemy traits: opponents may possess additional armor, increased mobility, elemental damage, and other enhancements;
  • new transportation for moving on planet surfaces;
  • a new pet appeared;
  • a unified resource storage for all built outposts;
  • updated database section in the character interface;
  • collectible items in the form of figurines with permanent bonuses (by analogy with Fallout bobbleheads).
  • new satellites: Muria and mini-bot;
  • Starborn abilities are enhanced;
  • function of item transfer in "New Game+" — you can save part of the inventory for the next playthrough;
  • additional photo mode and camera settings.

Terran Armada Expansion

The Terran Armada add-on costs $10 and is available on all platforms. For this money, the developers offer a new storyline dedicated to the confrontation with the Terran Armada — a fleet thought to be disappeared after the Colonial War and suddenly returned with the intent to establish its own rules.

A new companion has been added — a reprogrammed drone of the Terran Armada named Delta, which can become a member of the player's crew.

The invasion system also appeared: the star map now shows the Terran Armada's activity zones — battles take place at these points, offering valuable rewards for participation.

Among other innovations:

  • new ship models and additional modules for their improvement;
  • new types of equipment;
  • new crew member — compact robot ModelG;
  • expanded set of decorative elements for outfitting outposts.

For those unsure whether to dive into the world of Starfield, Bethesda released a special video featuring famous actor Keith David discussing the key features of the space RPG.
