DTS has found a way to integrate TV speakers into surround sound systems
DTS has found a way to integrate TV speakers into a surround sound system. The Play-Fi Home Theater system connects TVs to external speakers via WiFi. The first compatible TVs should be available in the third quarter of 2021 (in other words, by the end of October).
The company says Play-Fi Home Theater won't require manufacturers or customers to add additional hardware to their TVs. If you don't want to use your TV's built-in speakers, you can output center channel audio wirelessly to a compatible soundbar or front-facing speakers. The system can automatically adapt to the number of speakers connected to your TV, and you can expand your system with additional speakers later.
The system, based on DTS' long-established Play-Fi protocol, allows you to connect several other speakers, including up to two subwoofers, for surround sound. You can also play sound from the TV in other areas of your home if you have a multi-room space. In addition, you can listen to sound from the TV through headphones using the proprietary app.
The Play-Fi Home Theater approach is not entirely new. Sony has been allowing consumers to use the built-in speakers of compatible TVs as the center channel of a surround sound system for some time now. However, competition is always a good thing, and if DTS can lower the cost barrier of multi-channel audio with its system, so much the better.
