NASA paid $0.1 to Lunar Outpost for mining lunar regolith
NASA's Space Symposium paid $0.1 to Lunar Outpost on a contract to mine lunar regolith.
Why so little?
NASA and Lunar Outpost signed a contract for a token amount of $1. In late August, CEO Justin Cyrus received a check for 10 cents from space agency chief Bill Nelson, which is 10% of the full contract amount.
NASA said that the $1 contract was awarded because Lunar Outpost has already planned a lunar soil mining mission, so the company can easily set aside a portion of the received regulator for the agency. Exactly how much is not specified.
Lunar Outpost's mission is scheduled to launch in 2024. According to Cyrus, the company intends to mine 100g of regolith. Also included in the list of tasks is the search for water ice and volatile substances on the moon.
