Mercedes electric van not only doesn't harm the environment, it also improves it [video]
The recently unveiled Sustaineer van concept is all-electric, but it doesn't just harm the environment - it improves it. Fine particle filters on the front and underbody clean the air around the van regardless of its speed. It even uses ceramic-coated cast-iron disc brakes that both reduce the amount of dust in the air and limit brake wear.
Sustaineer also has solar panels on the roof to increase range and reduce the need for charging from an outlet (which sometimes contributes to CO2 emissions). They can also power devices whether the van is running or not, such as tools and laptops. Solar power on electrified vehicles is nothing new, but Mercedes clearly hopes that such introductions will make electric vehicles as environmentally friendly as possible.
Other eco-technologies include an energy-saving heating system and the active use of recycled materials. The filler is made from household waste, the cab bulkhead is built from natural straw, and the underside incorporates recycled polypropylene and used tires. Mercedes also reduces noise pollution with a quiet electric drivetrain and low rolling resistance tires.
Safety is also a concern. A camera monitors road conditions and reports potholes and other "nuisances" in the city, while digital mirrors provide a clearer field of vision than is common in cargo vans. "Biologically active" lights keep the driver alert by filling the cabin with daylight-like illumination.
Despite mentions of the project being concealed for large-scale production, no mention of the start of such production is given by Mercedes.
