MediaTek ran into Qualcomm due to overheating of chips
The market for single-chip systems, or so-called SoCs, is facing a big battle. For the first time in history, MediaTek has achieved the performance level of its main competitor, Qualcomm. And this probably provoked verbal duels between the two companies.
While the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips will launch ahead of MediaTek's Dimensity 9000, a heated battle is expected next year for positions in the premium smartphone segment and the market as a whole. Even before the official premiere of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Taiwanese rival MediaTek rebuked Qualcomm for facts.
"There is only one company in the world whose chips overheat, and that is not us," quotes MediaTek representative Chinese source My Drivers.
Initially, flagship smartphones based on Snapdragon 888 (for example, Xiaomi Mi 11) were noticeably overheating, and not necessarily in games. Later, the problem was fixed, but at the expense of software lowering the processor clock speed. The culprit was the Cortex-X1 super-core, which is part of the Snapdragon 888 processor.
One way or another, now the problem of overheating does not exist, but MediaTek decided to remind about it on the eve of the announcement of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Perhaps the Taiwanese company believes that the new SoC from Qualcomm will inherit old sores. It is equally possible that this is an attempt to divert attention from the recent backdoor scandal in mobile processors of the company, allowing to organize wiretapping of users.
And the editorial office gg wants to remind you that MediaTek itself at one time also had problems with overheating of single-chip systems, especially the 10-core platforms Helio X20 and Helio X30. But whoever remembers the old is out of sight, so it is better to observe the upcoming battle of the two yakozun from the sidelines.
