Bild to replace some journalists with artificial intelligence
German tabloid Bild, the most popular newspaper in Europe, plans to replace a number of editorial positions with artificial intelligence.
Here's What We Know
The newspaper "unfortunately be parting ways with colleagues who have tasks that in the digital world are performed by AI and/or automated processes"," owner Axel Springer SE said in an email to employees.
It said that the roles of some journalists, proofreaders and photo editors "will no longer exist as they do today"."
Bild does not have a specific estimate of the number of jobs that will be replaced by AI.
The newspaper said it will try to avoid forced redundancies, but hopes to reduce the editorial payroll.
The German Journalists' Association (DJV) criticised Springer's plans, warning that job cuts at Bild would "slaughter the group’s cash cow". The move was "not just antisocial towards employees, but also extremely stupid economically", it said.
