UN to discuss harnessing the power and potential of artificial intelligence
The United Nations is convening a global meeting to define the limits of artificial intelligence and harness its potential to empower humanity.
Here's What We Know
"AI for Good Global Summit" will take place in Geneva from 6-7 July. It will bring together around 3,000 experts from companies such as Microsoft and Amazon, as well as universities and international organisations, to try to develop a framework for working with AI.
The summit plans to identify ways to use artificial intelligence to meet the UN's lagging sustainable development goals. The event will also look at possible frameworks and guardrails to support the safe use of AI.
Among the announced participants are Amazon chief technology officer Werner Vogels, Google DeepMind chief operating officer Lila Ibrahim and former Spanish national football team captain Iker Casillas. The athlete suffered a heart attack in 2019 and is now advocating the use of AI to prevent heart attacks.
They will be joined by dozens of robots, including several humanoids such as the first ultra-realistic artist Ai-Da, humanoid rock singer Desdemona, and the most advanced medical robot, Grace.
