China is secretly developing technology in artificial general intelligence - research

From 2018 to 2022, Chinese scientists have published 850 papers indicating that Beijing is developing a thinking machine, including possible research on brain-computer interfaces.

Here's What We Know

The Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) think tank examined scientific papers involving about a dozen relevant technologies. As a result, they managed to find 500 research titles indicating China's development of general AI (AGI).

According to the analysts, five universities from Beijing are the biggest contributors. However, they do not rule out the possibility of breakthroughs in other regions of China, especially Wuhan.

The report's authors warned of the risks associated with a lack of transparency and co-operation in AGI research. They compared the situation to the "missile gap" - the misperception in the 1960s that the Soviet Union was far ahead of the US in missile technology.

The analysts said hiding scientific findings could lead to false assumptions that could trigger a chain of measures and countermeasures, as well as prompt espionage and sabotage.
