Santa Monica, California, has implemented artificial intelligence technology that automatically fines cars parked in bus lanes.
Here's What We Know
The system is installed directly in the buses. It has already been tested on the Big Blue line.
While the buses are travelling on their routes, special cameras record the number plates of cars that are parked in the wrong place. This allows the system to instantly identify the offender and issue a ticket.
During the 45-day experiment, the technology identified more than 500 potential violations. Each fine amounts to nearly $300 dollars.
Santa Monica officials have not yet decided whether they will use the system on a permanent basis.
