New York City underground uses artificial intelligence to track fare dodgers
The New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has tapped artificial intelligence to track fare evasion at several underground stations.
Here's What We Know
According to an MTA report, artificial intelligence was used at seven stations across the city in May to track unpaid rides. Officials use this data to compare it to paid fares.
More than 50 per cent of fare evasion is attributed to people going through the emergency exit. 20 per cent of passengers jump over the turnstile, 16 per cent slip through gaps and 12 per cent skip under the turnstile.
The report said the biggest spike in evasions occurs between 3pm and 4pm, with a smaller spike in the morning peak.
Last year, the agency estimated that fare evasion losses totalled $690 million.
This year, CCTV technology will be "expanded this year to approximately two dozen more stations".
