Google has invested $20 million in Digital Futures, a project that funds research into the development and ethical use of artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

The funds will go to support external academics studying the impact of machine learning technologies on society. Of particular interest is the potential for AI to transform economies, government and social institutions.

Digital Futures funds research on questions such as:

  • The impact of AI on global security and its use to protect organisations
  • AI's impact on the labour market and economy, workforce training and government use of AI
  • governance structures and cross-sector collaboration for responsible AI innovation.

Google said some of the funding has already been allocated in the form of grants to think tanks.
