San Francisco seeks review of permits for Cruise and Waymo robotaxi network expansion
San Francisco authorities have formally challenged a California regulator's decision to allow Cruise and Waymo to expand commercial passenger transport by unmanned vehicles.
Here's What We Know
According to city officials, the decision ignores safety and environmental risks. They are demanding a suspension of the permits and a review of the permitting process.
City Attorney David Chiu filed the request on behalf of the transport and planning authorities. He accused the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) of ignoring public safety and environmental issues when using drones.
Chiu is asking the CPUC to impose new reporting requirements for robotaxi developers with detailed data on accidents and violations. He's also pushing for a gradual expansion of drone use based on safety metrics.
