AI to generate stickers WhatsApp sometimes adds weapons to images of children on Palestine-related queries

In messenger WhatsApp, an AI sticker generator in some cases generates images of children with guns when Palestine-related prompts are entered.

In the past, the model began producing stickers with a tendency to create inappropriately violent or crude images, including child soldiers. According to media reports, some company employees have flagged and exacerbated the problem with prompts related to the war in Israel.

Meta spokesperson Kevin McAlister said the company is addressing the issue. He added that the company will continue to improve the AI features as they develop and based on user feedback.

Meta has previously experienced other instances of AI bias. For example, Instagram's auto-translator inserted the word "terrorist" into Arabic texts in profiles. The error led to the arrest of a Palestinian man in Israel in 2017.
