The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced a contest with a $25,000 prize for the best proposal to combat the growing threat of voice cloning using artificial intelligence technology.

Here's What We Know

As generative AI has evolved, the number of online voice cloning services has grown dramatically, raising concerns about their misuse, for example, to steal money through fraud. For example, fraudsters could spoof the voice of a company executive and request financial transfers on his or her behalf, or trick family and friends out of money.

Contestants are invited to submit ideas for combating such fraud by January 12, focusing on monitoring, preventing and assessing the risks of speech cloning technology. In addition to the $25,000 grand prize, there are awards for second and third place, as well as for teams.

According to the FTC, the winners' solutions can help protect citizens and businesses from harm even before the technology becomes widespread. In the absence of viable ideas, regulators may have to impose strict restrictions on the use of speech cloning tools.
