Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the company is spending billions of dollars to buy the latest generation of NVIDIA GPUs for the development of artificial intelligence technologies.

Here's What We Know

According to Zuckerberg, by the end of 2024, Meta's AI computing infrastructure will include 350,000 NVIDIA H100 graphics cards. These GPUs are used to train neural networks and machine learning.

The retail price of the H100 ranges from $25,000 to $30,000, with the graphics card going for over $40,000 on eBay. Counting at the lower end, the total contract value could be around $9bn.

In addition, Meta buys similar chips from AMD and other suppliers.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, such a large-scale infrastructure is necessary for the company for research in the field of artificial general intelligence (AGI) - a promising type of AI, comparable in capabilities to human intelligence.

The tech giant has previously invested tens of billions of dollars in projects such as training large language models of the Llama family and merging basic and applied AI research units.

This is expected to help Meta accelerate the development of advanced AI-based solutions for its products, including social networks and meta-universe.
