Chinese regulators have approved more than 40 artificial intelligence models for public use in the past six months. This comes after Beijing began requiring tech companies to obtain permits to launch their models in August 2023.
Here's What We Know
According to China's state-run Securities Times newspaper, Chinese regulators issued licences for 14 large language models last week. Xiaomi, 4Paradigm and 01.AI are among the recipients. This is the fourth batch of authorisations since August last year.
Previously, big tech companies such as Baidu, Alibaba and ByteDance received licences. They were among the first to be allowed to launch their AI models.
Chinese regulators then issued two more batches of authorisations in November and December. While the government does not disclose the exact list of approved companies, Securities Times reported licences for more than 40 models.
According to brokerage firm CLSA, there were 130 language models in China - 40 per cent of the global total. That is only slightly behind the 50 per cent share of the US.
