Meta has announced an expansion of functionality for identifying images created by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The corresponding update will appear on social networks Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

Here's What We Know

Today, Meta services only tag content generated by their own AI tools. Now, tagging will also be assigned to images from third-party companies such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock.

According to Meta management, the process will take several months. It requires the development of industry standards for labelling content from AI in conjunction with other technology companies.

Separately, Meta is working on classifiers to detect synthetic images that lack special tags. In addition, the company plans to make it more difficult to remove such tags from image files.

Meta has recognised that it is more difficult to identify fake audio and video materials than images. So far, the industry has no standards for their labelling.

Meta will also add the ability for users to voluntarily tag AI content when uploading to social networks. However, if they share the deepfake and don't report it, the company may "impose penalties," the statement said.
