House Speaker Mike Johnson announced the creation of a task force on the development of artificial intelligence in the US.

Here's What We Know

According to the Speaker's statement, the task force is designed to "ensure America's leadership in this strategic area." It will be headed by Congressmen Ted Lieu and Jay Obernolte.

The group's task is to prepare a comprehensive report outlining needed AI regulation and legislative recommendations. This will protect the interests of citizens and encourage further investment in AI technology.

However, the specific timeline of the task force's work and what results it is expected to produce are still unclear. Given the divisions between Republicans and Democrats in Congress, its effectiveness is questionable.

This decision comes after many other bodies, including the White House, federal agencies, and the EU, have already issued recommendations to regulate the AI field. Thus, Congress was one of the last to start working in this direction.

Currently, the Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission, Securities and Exchange Commission and other agencies are dealing with AI-related issues in the US.
