Meta is moving to use advanced artificial intelligence-based algorithms to recommend videos across Facebook's Reels, Groups and the main news feed. This was announced by the head of the social network Tom Alison.
Here's What We Know
According to Alison, Meta has already moved the short video service Reels, which competes with TikTok, to a new AI-based recommendation system. This has increased the watch time of the videos by about 8-10 per cent.
"This new model architecture is learning from the data much more efficiently than the previous generation. So that was like a good sign that says, OK, we’re on the right track" Allison noted.
Previously, Facebook used different recommendation algorithms for Reels, Groups and the main News Feed. But after the positive results on Reels, the company decided to implement a single AI engine for the entire video system of the social network.
"We’re working on a project to power our entire video ecosystem with this single model [...]. If we get this right, not only will the recommendations be kind of more engaging and more relevant, but we think the responsiveness of them can improve as well" explained the head of Facebook.
The switch to AI algorithms across Meta's various products is part of its new AI strategy following the ChatGPT breakthrough in late 2022. The company is spending billions to buy powerful GPUs to train models.
