US President Joe Biden has called on Congress to urgently pass legislation to regulate artificial intelligence, including banning "AI voice impersonation and more". The statement was made in his annual State of the Union address.

Here's What We Know

Biden urged lawmakers to "harness the promise of AI and protect us from its peril". He said the technology poses risks to Americans if left unchecked.

Biden's call comes weeks after a fake robocaller cloned his voice and addressed thousands of voters in the New Hampshire primary. State authorities called it an attempt to interfere in elections with AI.

The topic of legislative regulation of AI is periodically raised in the US Congress, but so far no meaningful laws have been passed in this area. About a year ago, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made an unsuccessful attempt to introduce a relevant bill.

Experts warn of the threat of AI-enabled disinformation to public discourse and polls. However, in an election year, it is unlikely that Congress is expected to pass strict restrictions on the AI industry.
