More than 5 years: Samsung is considering extending support for its smartphones

Last week, Google unveiled its new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro flagships, which are the first smartphones on the market with 7-year support. This means that their owners will receive security updates until 2030. It seems that Google's example is contagious and other companies are also thinking about extending their support period.

Details

Following Google's presentation, journalists raised the issue with Shin-Chul Baik, chief engineer and technical programme manager of the security group's technical programme manager for Samsung's Mobile eXperience division, at the Samsung 2023 developer conference in San Francisco. And he said that Samsung is now actively discussing extending support periods. He said that the vision of longer device support is in line with Samsung, and that in light of upcoming new regulations, Samsung is preparing to go beyond the current five-year support period.

Incidentally, Samsung now promises for its smartphones up to 4 years of major Android operating system updates and security patches within 5 years of release. That's still a pretty good support even now, which not all manufacturers can boast of.
