Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1: new processors for smart watches
Qualcomm has announced new processors for wearable electronics.
What we know
The American manufacturer rebranded and the new products are called now Snapdragon W5 and Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1. They are the successors to the Snapdragon Wear 4100 and Snapdragon Wear 4100+. The chips differ from each other only by additional co-processor AON (there is one only in the Plus version). It is responsible for the extreme power saving mode. In other respects, the SoCs are identical.
They received four Cortex A53 cores and one Cortex M55 core with a frequency of 250 MHz. Accelerator A702 with a clock frequency of 1 GHz is responsible for graphics. In addition, the processors are equipped with LPDDR4 memory and a new block U55, which is responsible for machine learning. As for the AON co-processor, it allows the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 to perform more tasks with less power consumption. It will be responsible for the operation of all sensors in the watch. In addition, the co-processor will be able to manage Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, GNSS. It also will support Deep Sleep and Hibernate power saving modes.
When to expect
The first watches based on the new processors will be released by OPPO and TicWatch. The gadgets should debut before the end of the year.
