An independent panel to review appeals from users of Threads in Meta

Meta's supervisory board has announced that users of the Threads app will now also have the opportunity to challenge the company's content moderation decisions. This independent group will have an impact on policy making for Threads, the official Meta app.

The Chair of the Supervisory Board emphasised the importance of independent accountability at the initial stage of the new app's development. Previously, the Supervisory Board only considered content moderation on Facebook and Instagram.

The appeal process for Threads users will be similar to that of Instagram and Facebook. After users have gone through Meta's internal appeal process, they will be able to appeal to the Supervisory Board. Meta will be bound by the board's decisions, although it is not obliged to follow its policy recommendations.

It is worth noting that Threads already has more than 130 million users, and Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta, has suggested that the platform could one day reach a billion users.

Meta has faced criticism for its content recommendation policy. For example, topics related to COVID-19 are currently blocked. The company also provoked user outrage when it said it would not recommend accounts that publish too much political content.

The Supervisory Board only considers a fraction of user appeals, and a decision may take several weeks or months, after which Meta may amend its rules.
