ASUS has unveiled the ROG Phone 8 series of gaming smartphones with an updated design, 165Hz screen, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and IP68 protection
ASUS held an event at CES 2024 where it showed off its new ROG gaming line of smartphones.
Here's What We Know
Like the previous generation, the new series of devices includes two models: the ROG Phone 8 and the ROG Phone 8 Pro. The devices get an updated look with a flat display, front camera hole and thin bezels. The ROG Phone 8 features customisable Aura RGB lighting logo, while the Pro version gets customisable AniMe Vision lighting with 341 LEDs. Both devices are IP68 dust and water resistant.
The smartphones feature a 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED LTPO display with Full HD+ resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, peak brightness up to 2500 nits, glove touch support and in-screen fingerprint scanner. Dimensions of both devices are 163.8×76.8×8.9 mm, and weight - 225 grams. The new products are thinner and lighter than the ROG Phone 7 series. The ROG Phone 8 comes in Rebel Grey and Phantom Black colours. In turn, the Pro version has only one colour - Phantom Black.
Under the bonnet of the ROG Phone 8 and ROG Phone 8 Pro is a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. The standard model comes equipped with 12/16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, while the Pro variant has 16/24GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 512GB/1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. Both devices are powered by a 5,500mAh battery. It supports 65W fast wired charging and 15W wireless charging. The devices are pre-installed with Android 14 operating system with ROG UI. Both phones are equipped with a conductive cooling system to dissipate heat. The new products also get a built-in speaker system, a 3.5mm jack, Air Trigger buttons for gaming, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, dual-frequency GPS, NFC and a USB-C port.
As for the cameras, the devices have four of them: a triple 50 MP main camera (Sony IMX890 with OIS) + 13 MP (wide-angle lens) + 32 MP (telephoto lens) and a 32 MP front-facing one.
Price & When We Can Expect It
Sales of the ROG Phone 8 and ROG Phone 8 Pro will start in the spring. The base model will be priced from $1099, while the top-end model will cost $1199.
