The US Air Force has deployed B-2A Spirit nuclear bombers to Iceland - the strategic jets will fly missions over Central Europe
The US Air Force normally deploys B-2A Spirit nuclear bombers to the UK at Royal Air Force Base Fairford. This week, however, the aircraft were moved to Iceland.
Here's What We Know
The UK Royal Air Force airbase is capable of providing excellent maintenance facilities for the nuclear bombers. The US Air Force is thought to have decided to deploy the strategic aircraft to Iceland to study how they perform in less than ideal conditions when support capabilities are limited.
The three bombers landed at Keflavik Air Base (Keflavik). It is worth noting that this is not the first visit to the Land of Geysers. The B-2A Spirit first visited the place in 2019. Five years ago, the aircraft also arrived at the airbase on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
This time, the 509th Bomb Wing sent three aircraft to Iceland. Two of them were Spirit of Ohio and Spirit of Alaska with flight numbers 82-1070 and 90-0040 respectively. The deployment of nuclear bombers is a vital component in the joint European and U.S. effort to improve interoperability. Some B-2A missions will be conducted over Central Europe.
