Germany will improve the ability of all its Eurofighter Typhoon fighters to track and escort targets with the ECRS Mk1 radar

The German Air Force wants to equip all of its Eurofighter Typhoon fighters with a new radar. It is called European Common Radar System Mk1 (ECRS Mk1).

Here's What We Know

The Bundestag budget committee has approved the modernisation of the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter fleet, which involves installing the ECRS Mk1 instead of the Captor-M radar. In addition, all new aircraft will also be equipped with this radar.

It is currently unclear how long the modernisation of the fighter fleet will last. However, it is known that it will begin after the delivery of 38 new Eurofighter Tyhoon fighters, which are scheduled to start in 2025.

German authorities will allocate $210.4m for the development, procurement and modernisation of the ECRS Mk1 during the coming budget cycle. Additional funding will be required for completion.

The new radar will allow Eurofighter Typhoon fighters to more effectively detect and track targets in air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. The Bundestag believes that the ECRS Mk1 will provide the capability to perform multiple missions independently at the same time.
