Germany is likely to block the sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters to Turkey
Turkey's purchase of European Eurofighter Typhoon fighters is unlikely. This is reported by Bloomberg.
Here's What We Know
We wrote that Turkey is in talks with Spain and the UK to get European countries to try to persuade Germany to approve the sale of 40 aircraft. Tayyip Erdogan will hold talks with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday.
However, the source said it is highly likely Germany will block the sale. The chancellor is not expected to give his consent, citing diplomatic differences between the NATO allies.
He has several reasons for this. Added to the Russian arms purchase, the delay in ratifying Sweden's NATO bid and the military campaign in Syria is Turkey's reluctance to support Israel, which is at war with Hamas.
Turkey is developing its own fifth-generation fighter jet but also wants to buy U.S. F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft. Negotiations on a deal worth up to $20bn have stalled again.
