Hackers have stolen more than $2.3 billion in cryptocurrency since the beginning of 2022

Hackers and fraudsters have enriched themselves by more than $2 billion in the three quarters of 2022 after successful cryptocurrency thefts. And in the last quarter alone, they made 30 hacks of large (and not so large) projects.

Here's What We Know

ImmuneFi released its third-quarter report, which says the attackers stole $428 million between July and August, with the Nomad Bridge and Wintermute hacks bringing the hackers a total of $350 million - $190 million and $160 million respectively. The top three with a significant lag was the fraud of the developers of the project Racoon Network and Freedom Protocol, due to which users lost $20 million.

Expectedly, almost all losses from thefts were recorded in the sector of decentralized finance (DeFi). The share of losses of such services was 98.8% in the third quarter of 2022. BNB Chain and Ethereum blockchains accounted for more than half of the hacks - 28.6% and 23.2%, respectively.

The most profitable period for hackers in 2022 was the first quarter. At that time, attackers were able to steal more than $1.2 billion in cryptocurrency, including $625 million after the Ronin bridge hack, which is still the biggest theft so far this year. In total, hackers and fraudsters enriched themselves by $2.328 billion in three quarters.
