U.S. banned the sale and import of Huawei and ZTE equipment over fears of spying on Americans
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has adopted final rules that prohibit the sale or importation of telecommunications equipment from certain Chinese manufacturers.
Here's What We Know
Huawei and ZTE, their subsidiaries, as well as Chinese manufacturer of surveillance equipment Dahua Technology, video surveillance firm Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology and telecommunications company Hytera Communications fell under the ban.
The commission attributed the decision to U.S. national security risks and concerns that Beijing could use Chinese technology companies to spy on Americans.
This came after five Chinese companies were blacklisted in March 2021 as threats to national security under a 2019 law aimed at protecting U.S. communications networks.
Huawei declined to comment.
