US authorities confident of low performance of Huawei's new 7nm processors

US authorities are confident that Huawei is still far from regaining its former positions, despite the successful Kirin 9000S chip. Officials believe that the new SoCs are slower than the old ones.

Here's What We Know

A few years ago, Huawei was the smartphone market leader, but US sanctions imposed in 2019 changed everything. Nevertheless, the company is trying to regain what it lost, and at the end of the summer it managed to release a series of Huawei Mate 60 models with Kirin 9000S.

The new processor is made using 7nm technology and supports 5G cellular networks. The chips are produced by the Chinese company SMIC in the face of US sanctions. The US authorities believe that Huawei will not be able to get new SoCs in large quantities, and in terms of performance they will be inferior to the old chips.

Such a statement was made by Thea Kendler, US Under Secretary of Commerce for Export Controls. She said that the available production capacity and yield levels do not meet the needs of today's market.

To be fair, the release of the Kirin 9000S was a cold shower for a number of US officials. Authorities even launched an investigation to determine the structure and origin of the new single-chip system. Republicans are now calling for stronger sanctions against both Huawei and SMIC.
