Apple starts manufacturing iPhone 15 in India - for the first time before the official announcement
Bloomberg reports that Apple supplier Foxconn will begin production of the iPhone 15 in India. Presentation of the new line of smartphones is expected in September.
Here's What We Know
Apple has long talked about the desire to reduce dependence on Chinese production, so it has been gradually increasing production in India over the past few years. The iPhone 15 smartphones will be manufactured at Foxconn's plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
What's interesting is that the Indian facility will start deliveries just a few weeks after the Chinese facility. Prior to the launch of the iPhone 14, production in India lagged behind shipments from China by about 6-9 months.
This is also the first time that mass production of certain iPhone models in India has started before their official launch. For example, India started production of last year's iPhone 14 at the end of September.
The scale of iPhone 15 production in India seems to depend on the availability of imported components and the expansion of production lines. Pegatron and Wistron factories are also expected to start assembling the iPhone 15 soon.
In addition, DigiTimes reports that Foxconn plans to start manufacturing AirPods in India by the end of 2024.
