HMD is preparing a Barbie-style "clamshell" and a modular smartphone that can be repaired at home
Last year, HMD announced that it will not only produce Nokia phones, but also devices under its own brand. At MWC 2024 in Barcelona, HMD shared some of its plans, though it hasn't shown any finished gadgets yet.
Here's What We Know
First of all, the company announced a collaboration with Mattel, so we are waiting for a Barbie-style phone. Although the hype around the film has already passed, HMD promises to release a novelty this summer.
It is known that it will be a pink-coloured "clamshell" - the manufacturer did not reveal any more details. Probably, it will not be a foldable smartphone, but a folding button phone. The company describes it as, "Promising style, nostalgia and a much-needed digital detox, this retro phone will flip the perception of smartphone culture and will be the hottest accessory this summer."
In addition, a repairable device that can be repaired by yourself is scheduled for release in July. Again, not much information is available, but it's likely that the phone will allow the back cover and possibly the screen and battery to be swapped out.
The press release also states: "As a company, HMD is committed to redefining screen life, improving repairability and creating meaningful partnerships within a multi-brand concept. You'll continue to see Nokia phones, and this summer we'll be bringing back an iconic device. You'll also see a stellar line-up of exciting new brands coming to market this year."
