Scientists in Japan have set a new record for internet speed, reaching 1.02 petabits per second (about 1 million GB/s) while transmitting data over a 1,808km fibre optic cable.

Here's What We Know

The key element of the technology was a 19-core cable with a standard diameter (0.125mm), where each core acts as an independent data link. To maintain the signal over such a long distance, the developers created an intelligent amplification system that works simultaneously with all 19 cores in two light bands (C and L), without mutual interference.

So, in ONE SECOND at this speed you can download:

  • 85,000 films in 4K;
  • 12,000 copies of GTA V;
  • 40 million photos;
  • the entire Wikipedia.

With this technology, it will be possible to run games without installation, instantly stream huge AI models and neural networks, stream VR and holographic video in real time, and much more.

This breakthrough is important for the future of backbone networks because it solves the problem of signal attenuation over long distances. Although the technology uses standard-sized fibre, its commercial deployment will take time - the production of such cables, compatible equipment and lower costs need to be worked out.
