The European Union has authorised the operation of German electric aerotaxis Lilium
The German company Lilium has received authorisation from the European Union to build and operate air taxis with vertical take-off and landing. The authorisation was issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency.
Here's What We Know
The new document allows the German company to design and manufacture electric aerotaxis, despite there being no current official regulations for the industry. Lilium spokesperson Alastir McIntoch said the design organisation's approval can be compared to a licence to operate.
The German company was founded less than 10 years ago. It is working on an air taxi called Lilium Jet. It will be able to fly a range of about 300 kilometres without recharging.
It is expected that Lilium will be able to start commercial flights within two years. The German company will compete with Boeing, Airbus and Volocopter, which also see promise in electric aerotaxis with vertical takeoff and landing.
