Meta again tries to dismiss FTC antitrust lawsuit
Almost two years after its initial dismissal, Meta is once again going to court to have the US Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) antitrust lawsuit dismissed.
Here's What We Know
The company argues that the FTC has not provided sufficient evidence of its monopolistic position in the social media market and actively refutes the concept of an antitrust market.
In support of its petition, Meta points to the lack of evidence of monopolisation of the social media market and the benefits that the acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp have brought to consumers. The FTC's previous lawsuit was dismissed in 2020 due to insufficient evidence, but the agency filed a revised complaint in 2021, bringing the case back before the court.
Meta actively refutes the concept of an antitrust market as defined by the FTC and argues that competition in the social media industry is not limited to just a few platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The company emphasises that there are other alternatives, such as TikTok, YouTube and others, that consumers choose to receive similar services.
The court's decision on this application may have a significant impact on the structure and competitiveness of the social media market in the future.
The court may confirm Meta's position that there is no monopoly and no market dominance or decide to continue the proceedings.
