Here's What We Know

USS Iowa (SSN 797) is a nuclear-powered submarine, which belongs to the Block IV version. It is designed to fight against enemy submarines and surface ships. Block IV submarines are characterised by an accelerated rate of construction and a longer service life.

If all goes according to plan, the USS Iowa (SSN 797) will join the fleet next year. The Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine is the fourth ship in the US Navy to be named in honour of the state of Iowa.

USS Iowa (SSN 797) is equipped with the Mk 41 vertical launch system. It will be able to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles to destroy surface and surface targets. The submarine will also be armed with Mk 48 torpedoes.
