Germany and Norway will build six diesel-electric Type 212CD submarines at a cost of $6 billion

Germany and Norway have begun construction of Type 212 Common Design (CD) diesel-electric submarines. The countries although to strengthen maritime defence capabilities and military cooperation.

The Type 212CD submarine is based on the Type 212A submarine. The latter has proven itself and is already in service with the German Navy and the Italian Navy.

Germany and Norway intend to build six submarines. The total cost of the project will be almost $6bn. Germany will receive two of the six submarines. The rest will be shipped to Norway. Deliveries will begin in 2029.

Interestingly, Germany and Norway will be the first countries in the world to operate identical submarines. The contractors plan to set up a joint life cycle management office to facilitate maintenance and upgrades of the submarines.

According to public sources, the Type 212CD will be 73 metres long, 10 metres wide and have a draft of 7 metres. The submarine will be able to reach a speed of 37 kilometres per hour. It will also receive SA9510S MkII, EM2040 Mil and EA640 sonars, as well as DM2A4 Seehecht torpedoes with a 260kg warhead and a range of 50km.
