A Chinese Type 093-class nuclear-powered submarine was allegedly lost due to being trapped by US and British submarines
British publications, citing a secret intelligence report, report the loss of the Chinese Type 093 nuclear submarine. This was independently written by the Daily Mail and The Times.
Here's What We Know
The People's Liberation Army Navy nuclear submarine allegedly fell into a Chinese trap set to intercept US and British submarines. According to British intelligence, the incident occurred on 21 August 2023 and caused the deaths of 55 crew members.
The submarine collided with anchor or chain obstacles that had been installed by the Chinese Navy to intercept enemy submarines. This led to the failure of the oxygen systems.
Information about the demise of the nuclear submarine first appeared in late summer. However, it was denied by Taiwan's Ministry of Defence. British authorities have not yet commented on the media materials, and China in August called the statements completely false.
Six nuclear-powered submarines were created under the Type 093 project. They are 11 metres wide, 107 metres long, have a displacement of 7,000 tonnes, six torpedo tubes and YJ-82 anti-ship cruise missiles.
