GDEB has been awarded nearly $1 billion for design work on the Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine programme with Tomahawk cruise missiles

On October 3, 2023, the Department of Defence announced contracts with only three companies. One of them is General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), for which the Pentagon has prepared almost $1bn.

Here's What We Know

The company received $967.2 million. The new agreement was a modification of the previously awarded contract N00024-20-C-2120. Work will take place at GDEB facilities in Connecticut, North Carolina, Virginia and Rhode Island through October of next year.

The contract is for shipyard support, research, development and design work related to Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines. Details were not specified.

Ten Virginia-class attack nuclear submarines are currently under construction. GDEB is working on the USS Idaho (SSN 799) and USS Utah (SSN 801) of the fourth generation (Block IV), and the USS Arizona (SSN 803) and USS Tang (SSN 805) of the fifth generation (Block V).

Another six submarines are being built by Huntington Ingalls Industries. The USS John H. Dalton (SSN 808) and USS Long Island (SSN 809) are in the queue. The day before it became known that SSN 810 will be called USS San Francisco. The name for the submarine with the flight number SSN 811 has not yet been chosen.
