The Russian Federation's Black Sea Fleet has received several heavy blows in recent months. Because of this, the Russians have decided to move their ships and submarines away from the western coast of Crimea.

Here's What We Know

Satellite images for October 4, 2023 show that the Russian command has decided to remove 14 warships and submarines from Sevastopol. These include three Project 636 Varshavyanka submarines with Kalibr cruise missiles, six large landing ships, the Project 22160 patrol ship Vasily Bykov, two Project 21631 Buyan-M small missile ships, and the Admiral Essen and Admiral Makarov frigates.

All of the ships listed above have travelled to Novorossiysk. Part of the Russian Federation's Black Sea Fleet is off the eastern coast of the Crimean peninsula. Four landing ships and one submarine remain in Sevastopol for the time being.

The reason for the flight of the Russian warships is obvious. Within weeks, the Ukrainian Defence Forces destroyed the large landing ship Minsk and the submarine Rostov-on-Don with Storm Shadow and/or SCALP EG cruise missiles in Sevastopol Bay, and attacked several vessels at sea with kamikaze atack drones. In addition, Crimea has been hit with modified Neptune anti-ship missiles.
