Brazil has begun construction of its first nuclear submarine - the Alvago Alberto attack submarine will receive six torpedo launchers, cruise and anti-ship missiles

The Brazilian Navy will receive its first nuclear-powered submarine at the end of the decade. The construction process started last week.

The prospective Brazilian submarine is called Alvago Alberto. On 4 October 2023, a steel cutting ceremony was held in Rio de Janeiro. The event took place at the Itaguai Construçoes Navais shipyard (ICN).

It should be noted that the steel cut will not be used for the construction of the submarine itself. It will be the material used to build the hull section, which will allow ICN's technical expertise to be assessed.

If approved, the shipyard will continue construction of the nuclear submarine. If everything goes according to plan, Alvago Alberto will join the Brazilian Navy in 2029. Four more diesel-electric submarines will be built as part of the submarine development programme.

Alvago Alberto will be 100 metres long, 9.8 metres wide and have a displacement of 6,000 tonnes. The nuclear-powered attack submarine will have six 533 mm calibre torpedo tubes. The submarine will be able to launch heavy torpedoes, sea mines, as well as anti-ship and cruise missiles.
