Following the USS Gerald R. Ford, the United States deploys the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower to the Mediterranean Sea to support Israel
The US Department of Defence recently announced the deployment of an aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) to the Eastern Mediterranean. Another US Navy aircraft carrier is expected to arrive in the region in the near future.
Here's What We Know
America is sending to the Mediterranean Sea the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). This is its first deployment in more than two years. It has been long planned and coincided with Hamas terrorist strikes on Israel.
The carrier group will depart from the base in Virginia in accordance with the standard deployment schedule. This was announced the day before by US Navy spokeswoman Lieutenant Caroline Leya.
The strike group, in addition to USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), includes Carrier Air Wing 3, the missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea, and guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely and USS Mason. The number of sailors exceeds 5,000.
As for the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), the world's largest and most expensive aircraft carrier travelled to the Eastern Mediterranean accompanied by the missile cruiser USS Normandy and five Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Also the US has squadrons of F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-35 Lightning II and A-10 Thunderbolt II in the region.
