US may set up new shipyard to build nuclear submarines due to China threat
A US congressional commission is calling on the Pentagon to set up a new plant to build nuclear submarines. The reason is the threat from China.
Here's What We Know
At the moment, China is building nuclear submarines faster. Due to its inability to catch up with the Middle Kingdom, the US may create a third plant where ship construction with a focus on nuclear submarines will be established.
A third site would allow America to keep pace with Chinese nuclear modernisation. The new shipyard would provide an expansion of the industry's ability to build nuclear submarines and strengthen U.S. strategic capabilities.
The two existing yards are owned by General Dynamics Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding. The commission's submission to the US Congress says a third shipyard should be built by private firms, but it would still require a large investment from the government.
