NASSCO will receive up to $753.8 million to repair and modernise two Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Chung-Hoon and USS James E. Williams
The US Navy has signed a contract with National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) for the repair of two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Work will begin this month.
Here's What We Know
NASSCO is a subsidiary of General Dynamics. It received $15.6 million for maintenance and modernisation of the destroyers USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and USS James E. Williams (DDG 95). If all options are exercised, the amount will increase to $753.8 million.
According to the US Navy, work on USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) will begin next month and continue for two years. The ship is likely to go into dry dock at the San Diego shipyard. Work on USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) will begin within two weeks and take 23 months. The destroyer will head to a shipyard in Norfolk.
Both ships will have the AN/SLQ-32 electronic warfare system upgraded. The destroyers are likely to get the Block 2 system instead of the Block 1. It was first installed on the destroyers in 2014.
