The Japanese helicopter carrier JS Izumo will conduct exercises with fifth-generation F-35B Lightning II fighter jets off the US coast
As part of Japan's preparations to receive the fifth-generation F-35B Lightning II fighters, the JS Izumo helicopter carrier will take part in manoeuvres with the US Navy. The exercise will take place in 2024.
Here's What We Know
The UK Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales is completing an extended exercise off the east coast of the US. During the event, a US F-35B Lightning II fighter jet landed aboard a British ship for the first time in history.
Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force intends to conduct similar exercises in 2024. The helicopter carrier JS Izumo, one of the largest ships in the Japanese Navy, will sail to the east coast.
Japan has ordered 42 fifth-generation short takeoff and vertical landing fighter jets. The $20bn deal also includes 63 conventional F-35A Lightning II aircraft for the Air Self-Defence Force.
The JZ Izumo was converted to operate the F-35B Lightning II a few years ago. Last month, it was revealed that Japan was able to modernise the JS Kaga helicopter carrier. The first six F-35B aircraft will be delivered in late 2024.
