Media: Embracer Group holding company may sell Gearbox Software - the author of Borderlands series and other popular games
The global restructuring of Embracer Group holding company continues.
Recently the company announced the closure of Volition studio - the authors of Saints Row and Red Faction. And today there is another interesting and potential news.
Here's What We Know
Reuters reported that Embracer Group is considering the sale of Gearbox Software - the author of the Borderlands series. Thus, the company's management plans to optimise costs and improve its financial position. But this step seems illogical, because Gearbox games are very popular and sold in huge numbers. Probably, some large company is so interested in buying the American developer that it made an interesting offer, which Embracer management cannot refuse.
Reuters sources did not disclose either the potential buyer or the approximate value of the deal.
Embracer published a statement in which it refused to comment on such information, but admitted that in the course of restructuring some studios will be closed or sold.
Update: Embracer has told Game Developer it won't comment on the status of specific studios affected by its restructuring programme, but said the ongoing process could result in the "closing of studios, downsizing, and termination of projects with low projected returns". https://t.co/sY28R0A5uQ

Interestingly, the news of Gearbox's potential sale caused Embracer's stock to rise 5%.
Note: Embracer Group acquired Gearbox Software in 2021 for $1.4 billion.
